Plan for at least 51 cm of eye-to-screen distance, then buy the desk depth that allows it.
The governing rule is short: the desk area should be deep enough to accommodate a monitor placed at least 20 inches (51 cm) away from the eyes.
That distance is measured from the eye, not from the front edge of the desk, which is why measuring from the desk surface alone tends to produce screens that end up too close.
Depth is consumed by more than the screen. The monitor stand occupies the back of the surface, the keyboard needs room in front, and the remaining gap is what actually delivers the 51 cm.
On narrow screens, swipe or scroll the plate sideways.
This is where small writing desks fail as computer desks. Their depth is set by the paper they were meant to hold, not by the eye-to-screen distance a monitor requires.
An ergonomic desk, like an adjustable drawing table, addresses this by offering mechanical adjustments for the placement of its elements, and it is usually a close companion to an ergonomic chair.
The order to work in is: place the screen at a comfortable eye height with at least 51 cm of distance, then verify that the keyboard still fits without pushing the screen nearer.
