Desk Height: the Measurement Table

Standing desk heights run from 70 to 128 cm; a seated desk is fitted by adjusting the chair.

The height band for standing desks is 70 to 128 centimetres, which in inches is roughly 28 to 50. That is a manufacturing span covering the shortest and tallest users the category is designed to serve.

Because it is a span and not a recommendation, the correct height is the one that fits the individual user. The test is postural: the elbow near a right angle, the shoulders relaxed, and the wrist roughly flat over the keyboard.

For a seated desk the logic changes completely. Adjusting the working height relative to the user is done by adjusting the chair height rather than the desk surface, which means the desk itself never moves.

That difference explains why a fixed desk fits some people and not others. The chair has a limited range of travel, and once it runs out, the legs either lift off the floor or the arms rise above the elbow line.

A useful procedure is to set the chair first, note the resulting elbow height, and only then check whether the available desk lands within reach of it.

If the answer is no, the options are a different chair, a different desk, or an adjustable surface that covers both seated and standing positions.

  • Standing desks: 70 cm to 128 cm (about 28 to 50 in).
  • Seated desks: working height is set by the chair.
  • Check elbow angle, shoulder drop, and wrist flatness.
